FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE OPEN CALL

What is an emerging artist?
The term “emerging artist” is independent of age. Artists who have gone well beyond the status of ‘amateur artist’ while not yet being professional artists. Artists who show potential and have achieved certain awards or grants and/or have participated in exhibitions.
Is there any compensation for participating?
Once again, in its 12th edition, Open Portfolio Bilbao will grant a €200 support as recognition for participation and to boost the artist’s work.
Who can participate in OPEN Bilbao?
The open call is aimed at emerging artists of any nationality whose practice is linked to graphic techniques (woodcut, lithography, etching, screen printing, linocut…) as well as contemporary, hybrid or experimental techniques, as long as they maintain a clear relationship with graphic language. There are no age restrictions, and originality, conceptual strength and technical quality will be especially valued.
How and when is the selection communicated?
Once the open call closes, on July 21st, the committee will make the selection and notify the selected artists by email throughout that week.
Can I apply if I’ve already participated in previous editions?
Yes, you can apply again, as long as the proposal is a new project, different from the one you presented in previous editions.
We are a collective, can we apply?
It is not common to have collectives in Open Portfolio. However, it is essential that the project submitted maintains a single creative line to ensure coherence and consistency in the work exhibited. This means that, although there may be multiple artists, the vision and style of the project must be uniform and complementary.
Can artworks be sold during the event?
Open Portfolio is not conceived as a direct sales space. The goal is to give visibility to your work, generate professional connections, and support your career as an emerging artist. Prices must be clearly indicated, and there must be at least 5 pieces available for sale to the public with a maximum price of €200 (plus 10% VAT).
