OPEN EXPERIENCES 2024

“OPEN showed me exactly what I needed to see: my next steps and my questions”

For graphic artist Anđela Rončević, taking part in the last edition of OPEN Portfolio Bilbao was a revealing experience. “OPEN Portfolio was my very first encounter with the wider world of emerging graphic artists,” she explains. “These few days were marked by wonderful new insights, great organisation, generous and creative new friendships, and with fresh clarity in my printmaking direction.”

That weekend in Bilbao, surrounded by artists with diverse languages, techniques and concerns, offered her a perspective that went beyond the technical: it helped her situate herself and gain a clearer view of her own processes and possibilities.

“Through this experience, I have realized how much more is possible for me as an emerging printmaker.”

After the event, she returned to Switzerland and Croatia with a powerful creative energy. “I had a very powerful creative flow in the studio. I created a number of new works that were completely out of my comfort zone in terms of technique and dimension.” The momentum from Bilbao soon translated into production, exploration and new directions.

Shortly after, she spent two weeks in Gran Canaria learning electro-etching from master Alfonso Crujera. “I have learnt about such possibilities because of the OPEN Portfolio. I am now keen on developing an even deeper knowledge in low-toxic printmaking.”

Her way of understanding printmaking combines intuition, craftsmanship and experimentation. “I find the world of printmaking impressive; it is a combination of a human impulse to make a mark or carve a line, develop serious craftsmanship, and find joy in experimentation.”

She also acknowledges the difficulties of the path: “As artists, it can be difficult to find our own ways, learn how to ask proper questions, and simply see what the next step could be.” In her case, OPEN Portfolio became that moment of clarity: “It showed me exactly what I needed to see: my next steps and my questions.”

And all of it without rushing, but with persistence. As she puts it, “we all need patience and stamina in printmaking.”
