Artist Statement Igor Ost
I was born at the intersection of historical epochs. Thirty years after the collapse of the USSR, the cultural and ideological environment that shaped my childhood now appears as a kind of utopia — a lost world that nonetheless remains embedded in the cultural code of my generation.
My work explores the notions of time, collective memory, and the illusory nature of reality. These reflections often lead me to question the idea of civilization’s linear, progressive development as an unquestionable good.
I work within a figurative visual language, shifting between painting and graphic techniques. What interests me most is creating an atmosphere where objects and figures in space function as open-ended signs rather than fixed references. The meaning of each symbol can change depending on its relationships with others, engaging the viewer in a dialogue of shifting associations and interpretations.
Ultimately, I want those who encounter my work to experience the uniqueness of the moment — to sense their own presence in time and to recognize that nothing will ever be quite the same again.
